This More American Life (2018)
This project manipulates scans of my childhood photos and rewrites the past, as if my family of Haitian immigrants owned generations’ worth of assets in the United States before I was born. As a 2nd-gen Haitian-American navigating Western culture, like others with hybrid identities, ‘Americana’ felt so close YET so far.
The ‘catalog’ format presents elusive nostalgia as a commodity for those who can afford it. A return to the past can be easily achieved, if one surrenders to consumerism and restricted gender roles.
